Having breast pain (mastalgia) can make many women feel anxious right away. The mind often goes to the worst-case scenario when there is a dull ache, a sharp twinge, or a feeling of heaviness. We think that the first step to peace of mind is to learn about your body. Breast pain is very common, but it is not usually a sign of cancer. However, it is important to know why you are in pain for your physical and mental health.
In this article, we’ll talk about the most common reasons for breast pain and help you figure out when it’s time to see a doctor.
Different Types of Breast Pain and What They Mean
Breast pain usually falls into one of two groups: cyclic and non-cyclic.
Breast Pain That Comes and Goes
This is the most common type of pain, and it has to do with your menstrual cycle. It usually hurts in both breasts and is often described as a heavy, radiating pain that gets worse in the two weeks before your period. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone change naturally, which makes the breast tissue swell and hurt.
Breast Pain That Isn’t Cyclic
This pain doesn’t happen every month and usually stays in one area. It might hurt like a stab or a burn. There are many things that can cause non-cyclic pain, like breast cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs that become painful, or fibroadenomas, which are lumps that aren’t cancerous but put pressure on a specific area. Sometimes, what feels like breast pain is actually a strain in the chest wall, neck, or shoulders, or it could be a side effect of some medications, like hormonal treatments.

When Should You Be Worried?
Most of the time, breast pain goes away on its own or with small changes to your lifestyle. However, there are some symptoms that you should never ignore. If you have a lump that doesn’t change with your cycle, is painful, or stays the same, we suggest making an appointment for a clinical exam. You should also pay attention to changes in your skin, like redness, dimpling, or a texture that feels like an orange peel.
Other signs that need medical attention are blood coming out of the nipple on its own, especially if it is bloody, and localized, intense pain that stays in one spot instead of spreading to the whole breast. Lastly, if you have signs of an infection like fever, localized heat, or pus, you should get professional help right away to treat conditions like mastitis or an abscess.
